The American Dream
In 1900, while walking the beat as a reserve police officer, Oscar Winski, an immigrant from Poland, took notice of the amount of scrap metal generated by businesses and homes in his community of Lafayette, Indiana. Realizing an opportunity to impact the community, Oscar spent his off-duty hours pushing a cart through the streets and alleyways of Lafayette, gathering up scrap metal and taking it home to his garage where he would sort and resell it to regional mills and foundries.
In 1907, Oscar opened his first scrap metal business with his son, and shortly thereafter was joined by another son, then a son-in-law. Over the years, family has become synonymous with Oscar Winski Company. Five generations later, we still celebrate and honor history in the work we do every day.
