Lafayette Steel & Aluminum Invests in New Turnstiles
Promises Customers More Value, Faster Turnaround

INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA—As a result of its aggressive, continuous improvement and lean manufacturing initiatives, Lafayette Steel & Aluminum has brought two new Braner coil turnstile units online to streamline its production processes.

The pair of 60k x 72” x 4-arm models will simultaneously feed two slitter and one cut-to-length machines, facilitating significantly faster and easier coil changeover procedures during production.

As V.P. and general manager Bill Rothrock explains, having these turnstiles in place will allow Lafayette Steel & Aluminum to improve cost efficiencies in several ways that, in aggregate, will translate into a high-quality product at a better value for customers.

“Having these units in place,” says Rothrock, “will reduce our handling of the coils and, thus, any incidental material damage that can result from that. This will allow us to maintain optimum product quality, while saving on material cost. Likewise, the turnstiles will also streamline our operations to improve our turnaround time.”

Looking ahead to the next phase in the company’s “continuous” improvement, Rothrock says they’re conducting trials using a new slit-coil shrink-wrap packaging line designed to yield a full plastic wrap that can eliminate the need for steel banding.

The automated packaging system will further save labor and time in production, while the full plastic wrap will optimize material protection against the elements. Meanwhile, the plastic material will better protect the environment and employees, because it is recyclable and safer than handling conventional steel bands.
