At the same time, we provide safe and enjoyable working conditions, competitive wages and career opportunities to our loyal workforce, and a fair return on investment to our shareholders. Hard Working, Humble Beginning Our company was founded in 1907 by Oscar Winski, a Lafayette policeman who became one of Indiana’s earliest metal recyclers. He started this business by pushing a cart through streets and alleys, gathering scrap metal from industries and residences. He sorted the scrap in his home garage, re-selling alloy-specific metals by the truckload to regional mills and foundries. From his first business location on Wabash Avenue on Lafayette’s south side, Winski billed himself as “The Iron King,” building a core business of buying, processing and reselling scrap iron. Family BusinessBy 1938, his sons Louis and Mose had joined the business, formed a corporation and continued to expand its scrap iron work. A third generation, Henry and Doris Silver, came next. Under their direction, the company moved in 1975 to today’s headquarters on North Ninth Street in Lafayette. The Silvers built a new warehouse facility for processing nonferrous scrap metal and an expanded ferrous scrap-processing yard. Today, the company is owned and operated by the fourth and fifth generations of the family. Current family members include President Michael Bluestein, an employee since 1971; his wife, Margery Bluestein, Corporate Secretary-Treasurer; their daughter, Marla, and sons, David and Alex; and Michael’s brother, Steve Bluestein, Executive Vice President and an employee since 1985. Four Divisions TodayOscar Winski Company’s facilities now encompass more than 368,000 square feet of metal processing, warehousing and distribution space, with continued expansion plans for all operating divisions.Over the last three decades, the company has grown into a diverse metal business with four divisions:
