Environmental Compliance

Environmental Programs Set the Tone

Unique in its business model of resourcing used and discarded materials that, literally, can come from anywhere, Oscar Winski Company—and, specifically, the Oscar Winski Metals Recycling division—maintains an extremely strict processing protocol reaching across every touch point we have with the world around us—from the visitor entrance gate to our water runoff.

SREA Compliant

Industrial, retail and consumer scrap suppliers can all do business with Oscar Winski knowing OWC is fully compliant with the Reasonable Care Program under the Superfund Recycling Equity Act (SREA) of 1999.

In other words, Oscar Winski is one of the strongest links in the chain of cradle-to-grave scrap material handling, recycling and disposal.

Recognizing the Wabash River as the primary natural resource in our hometown, Lafayette, Indiana, Oscar Winski Company is proud to maintain a sound Stormwater Pollution Prevention (or “Swip”) Plan as directed by the EPA.

The plan involves continuous chemical monitoring of each of our company’s storm water discharge points, with periodic third-party engineer inspection and sign-off, concluded with an annual report to the state.

A clean record every five years results in the renewal of our National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit.

SPCC Program

A key component of Oscar Winski’s environmental stewardship is our Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) program that specifically meets federal mandates for proper on-site chemical storage, as well as procedures in a “what if” spill-response scenario.

From spill-protection safeguards to all the training, duty assignments, tools and procedures necessary to minimize the environmental impact should an accident occur, everything is in place.

Radiation Monitoring

Customers of Oscar Winski—especially the mills and foundries purchasing processed scrap metals—will appreciate OWC’s intense radiation monitoring protocols.

Not only do we operate a state-of-the-art Ludlum radiation monitoring system that scans every inbound and outbound scrap load, but we maintain the system’s detection settings at a level far more sensitive than required by the state.

PCB and CFC Training

Based on the wide range of products and materials that represent metal scrap, including appliances, refrigeration units, electrical transformers and so on, Oscar Winski Metals Recycling strictly follows EPA guidelines for certifying such items as free of harmful PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) and CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons).

For the future, OWC is even looking at investing in the training and equipment needed to conduct the reclaiming of such fluids on site. Instruction on how to prepare scrap items that have PCB and CFC fluids is available by clicking here.
